We keep the actual WKU academic calendar taped up by the phone, because move-out season doesn't run on "sometime in May," it runs on the exact week the university sets. Here's what that means for booking a container.
Anyone who's rented to WKU students for more than a year or two learns fast that the calendar matters down to the day, not just the month. We used to quote "late May" and "late August" like everyone else, until enough landlords called asking why we didn't have a container ready the exact week they needed it. Now we track WKU's published academic calendar directly, because a rental turning over needs to be sized and scheduled around commencement and hall move-out dates, not a general sense of "graduation season."
The pattern is consistent year over year even as the exact dates shift slightly: a heavy rush in the first one to two weeks of May as spring semester wraps up, a quieter stretch through summer, then another spike in the two to three weeks before fall classes start in late August as landlords turn units for new tenants. If you're managing rentals in the neighborhoods around campus, University Boulevard, or the streets feeding into it, this is the busiest stretch of your year, and it's ours too.
| Date | Event | What It Means for You |
|---|---|---|
| May 6, 2027 | Spring commencement | Graduating students clearing out apartments and dorm rooms |
| May 8, 2027 | Spring residence halls close | Peak dorm and off-campus move-out, book ahead |
| Aug 17–18, 2026 | Early fall move-in window | First wave of incoming students, some units need turning before this |
| Aug 21, 2026 | Fall residence halls open | Main move-in day, heaviest traffic around campus |
| Aug 24, 2026 | Fall classes begin | Hard deadline for units to be ready |
Dates reflect WKU's published 2026-2027 academic calendar and are subject to updates from the university. We recheck the calendar each year and adjust our seasonal scheduling to match. See our pricing guide for current rates by size.
Everyone needing a container that same week calls at once. Reaching out even three or four days before hall close-out gets you a much better delivery slot.
Couches, mattresses, and desks that didn't survive four years or aren't worth moving are the most common move-out debris. No prep needed, they go in as-is.
Property managers turning several units near campus can set up a rotation so containers move between addresses as each lease turns over.
Packaging from new furniture, move-in cleaning debris, and the odd rejected mattress or rug show up in the week before fall classes start.
Streets close to campus can be tight. A driveway or off-street spot avoids the right-of-way permit that street placement requires.
We hold extra capacity for the May and August windows specifically, but earlier booking still gets you first pick of delivery times.
WKU shifts its exact dates by a few days most years, since commencement and hall closing don't fall on the same calendar date every spring. That's a small detail that matters a lot if you're a landlord trying to have a unit cleaned out, re-keyed, and re-listed before a new tenant's lease starts in August. We'd rather pull the actual published dates each year than tell a property manager "sometime around graduation" and have them find out the container showed up a week later than they needed it.
If you're new to renting near WKU, or you've just picked up a few more units this year, the short version is this: mark the residence hall close date and the fall move-in date on your calendar the day WKU publishes them, and call us to get on the schedule before the rush starts, not during it.
For the 2026-2027 academic year, WKU's spring semester ends with commencement on May 6, 2027, and residence halls close on May 8, 2027. That first full week of May is when we see the heaviest call volume from landlords, property managers, and parents helping students move out, so booking a few days ahead of that window is worth doing.
Residence halls officially open for fall 2026 move-in on August 21, with an early move-in window on August 17-18 for students in certain programs. Classes begin August 24. Landlords and property managers turning over off-campus rentals for new tenants typically want a dumpster on-site in the week or two before that, once the prior tenant has moved out.
Yes. If you manage several properties near campus and need containers rotating between units as leases turn over in May and August, we can set up a standing account with one invoice instead of booking each property as a separate order. Tell us how many units you're turning and roughly when, and we'll build a schedule around it. See our multi-property account page for how that works.
A 10 or 15 yard covers most single-student apartments and dorm-adjacent housing. A full house shared by three or four roommates usually needs a 15 or 20 yard, especially if furniture is being left behind rather than moved. Tell us the unit size and we'll size it right the first time. Our dumpster sizes guide has more on load capacity by container.
Because it's not spread out. A huge share of Bowling Green's rental turnover near campus happens inside the same one to two week window in May and again in August, tied directly to the academic calendar. Everyone needs a container at once, so calling even a few days ahead of the rush gets you a much better delivery window than calling the day of.
Tell us your unit count and turnover dates, and we'll get you scheduled before the rush hits.
